Pool tables already take up a lot of space, but the table itself isn’t the only thing you have to consider when setting space aside to house a pool table. You also have to make sure you have enough space to play the game without hitting into your walls.
So, how far should a pool table be from the wall? In general, you need at least 5 feet of open space between a pool table and a wall, but how much space you actually need depends on how long your pool cues are.
But keeping your pool table at least five feet from surrounding walls is just the minimum. You may want even more space. In this article, we will discuss how much space you need at a minimum, as well as the reasons you might want a little more space.
How Far Should a Pool Table be from the Wall?
Like we said above, the amount of space you need between your pool table and the walls of the room you’re keeping it in depends on how long your pool cues are.
Pool cues come in a variety of sizes between 48 inches for children or people of short statues to 61 inches for players at are extraordinarily tall. The distance between your wall and the edge of your pool table should be at least the length of your pool cue. Having five feet all the way around the table when using standard cues ensures that you will be able to make any shot necessary without putting a hole in your wall.
However, you might consider having more space than just the minimum for several important reasons, which we will discuss below.
Consider Extra Space for Socializing
Pool is a social sport. You can enjoy practicing by yourself, but it takes at least two to play a game, so at the very least, you want enough space that two people can comfortably move around the table holding cues and possibly a beverage.
Space for spectators or more players if you’re playing doubles should also be considered. A two extra feet of space on even just one side can help make your pool room feel less cramped when you have guests.
Consider the Furniture in Your Room
It’s not just the walls you have to worry about. You don’t want your bar or couch to get in the way of your shots, and you don’t want to hit anyone seated or standing near those locations accidentally. Even if you’re not planning on entertaining in your pool room, you may want a table for drinks or a cue rack.
If you plan to have furniture in the room as well as the pool table, make sure to account for the extra space it takes up.
Consider the Feel of the Room
If your pool table is going into a spare bedroom with four solid walls and a door, having five feet around, it might still leave you feeling cramped. But if it is going into a basement rec room with an open concept, even if the pool area is limited to a small space, it will feel more spacious and comfortable.
An open-concept space will also help your guests feel comfortable while you’re enjoying a game of pool.
Make Extra Space for High Traffic Areas
If you live with other people and your pool table is near a high traffic area, you might want to have a couple of extra feet on that side of the table. This way, your pool playing doesn’t interrupt the flow of traffic in your home, and your game isn’t constantly interrupted by children or pets running from room to room.

How Close to a Wall Can You Put a Pool Table?
If you don’t mind making awkward shots or accidentally knocking a hole in your wall, then you can put the pool table as close four feet to a wall if you’re using a standard length cue, but this is in no way advisable.
You’ll be able to get through a game awkwardly, but if you’re going to invest in a pool table for your home, you should at least be able to play the game as it should be played, right?
